Our Doctor

Dr. Richard Yilin Zhang is the founder of Lexington Eye Care in Lexington, Massachusetts. With over 20 years of clinical experience, he provides comprehensive eye care for patients of all ages, with a special emphasis on myopia control and dry eye treatment. He is dedicated to delivering personalized, patient-centered care and long-term vision management, offering treatment plans that address patients’ current needs while supporting their future eye health.

Dr. Richard Yilin Zhang, M.D., O.D., Ph.D., FIAO

Dr. Richard Yilin Zhang is an experienced eye care professional with advanced medical, research, and clinical training in both ophthalmology and optometry. He has been serving patients in the Boston area since 1998, with a special focus on children’s vision care, myopia management, specialty contact lenses, and treatment of ocular diseases.

 

Medical and Academic Training

Dr. Zhang began his medical career at Shandong Medical University, where he completed his medical degree and residency in Ophthalmology. During this period, he specialized in Pediatric Ophthalmology, with particular focus on the diagnosis and treatment of myopia and amblyopia. Upon completion of his training in 1989, he was awarded a Master of Medicine degree in Ophthalmology.

Following graduation, Dr. Zhang practiced as an ophthalmologist at Qilu Hospital. He later pursued advanced scientific research at National University of Singapore, earning a Ph.D. in Neuroscience in 1995. His doctoral research focused on neural innervation of the intrinsic muscles of the eye, providing a strong scientific foundation for his clinical expertise in vision development and eye function.

Optometry Training and U.S. Clinical Experience

To further expand his clinical expertise, Dr. Zhang completed his Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree at New England College of Optometry in 1998. He is board certified in the treatment and management of ocular disease and holds professional licensure in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

During his training in the United States, Dr. Zhang also gained clinical experience at the Department of Ophthalmology at Boston Children's Hospital and Lahey Hospital & Medical Center.

Clinical Focus and Specialties

Dr. Zhang has practiced optometry in the Boston area for over 25 years, providing comprehensive eye care services including complete eye examinations and contact lens fittings. He has developed particular expertise in managing myopia progression in children using evidence-based treatment options, including:

  • Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses

  • MiSight® soft contact lenses

  • Low-dose atropine eye drops

  • Stellest™ myopia control lenses

Dr. Zhang is a certified designer for Wave Ortho-K lenses and is licensed to fit multiple orthokeratology lens designs, including CRT, GOV, and Euclid lenses.

In addition to pediatric vision care, Dr. Zhang provides specialty contact lens fittings such as bifocal, multifocal, toric, and gas permeable (GP) lenses. He also offers amblyopia treatment for children and advanced dry eye treatment using OptiLight®, the only FDA-approved IPL therapy for dry eye, as well as OptiLift® treatment.

Professional Affiliations

Dr. Zhang is an active member of the American Academy of Orthokeratology and a Fellow of the International Academy of Orthokeratology.
